I worked with our research partners to understand what customers need, and I worked with PM and engineering to sort through hardware limitations that came our way and delivered a pairing flow design that is easy to use and performant.
Context:
The cost of buying a console is the greatest barrier to entry into the Xbox ecosystem. For example, in Brazil the tariffs placed on electronic goods puts an Xbox console out of reach for many. However, our subscription based Game Pass is quickly growing year over year.
Challenge:
However, unlike traditional Xbox setups, This is a completely new vertical and Smart TVs don’t have native support for controllers which presented a unique challenge: how do we guide customers—some new to gaming—through a Bluetooth pairing process using just a TV remote and limited system-level UI?
Impact:
Highly extensible and performant pairing design that we’ve been able to export to partner hardware with minimal rework.
